The City Breathing: The politics of spirituality, the spirituality of politics

What goes wrong when our politics are divorced from our spiritual life, and our spiritual life from our politics? Is there a way of reconciling the two?

The Ecology, Cosmos and Consciousness salon presents:

The City Breathing:
The politics of spirituality, the spirituality of politics

CJ Stone

We’re living in a time of unprecedented change. Every science fiction dystopia is coming true. We have climate change, economic meltdown, the rise of corporate fascism, and a global surveillance state which watches our every move, spying on us in the street, at the workplace, and at our leisure activities. There’s nothing we do that isn’t being watched. Even our thoughts are watched, as we obsessively jot them all down as status updates on Facebook. It’s like we are conspiring in our own imprisonment. The question is, what can we do about it? Is political campaigning enough or must we change ourselves before we change society? What goes wrong when our politics are divorced from our spiritual life, and our spiritual life from our politics? Is there a way of reconciling the two?

CJ Stone is an author and columnist. He wrote a column for the Guardian Weekend from 1993 till 1998. It was called Housing Benefit Hill and won the writer much acclaim. He has also written columns for the Big Issue, for Mixmag, for Radio 4’s The Afternoon Shift, for Prediction magazine and for Kindred Spirit, as well as writing regularly for the New Statesman and the Independent on Sunday, amongst others. Currently he is a working postman. He has written seven books, including the acclaimed Fierce Dancing: Adventures in the Underground, and The Last of the Hippies.
