This special lecture on the challenge of humanitarian intervention will be given by the Rt Hon Sir Lawrence Freedman
The terms of debate on humanitarian intervention in Britain shifted dramatically between the 2011 military intervention in Libya and parliamentâs vote against intervention in Syria in August 2013. As Anne Perkins argued in the Guardian earlier this year âthe full impact of the UKâs vote against intervention in Syria has yet to be feltâ in terms of Britainâs ability to intervene in international humanitarian crises. Where does this leave Britain in light of the commitment made as part of the Stockholm Declaration on the Holocaust, article 3 of which states that: âwith humanity still scarred by genocide, ethnic cleansing, racism, anti-semitism and xenophobia, the international community shares a solemn responsibility to fight those evilsâ?
This special lecture on the challenge of humanitarian intervention will be given by the Rt Hon Sir Lawrence Freedman, Professor of War Studies at King's College London, a post he has held since 1982. His most recent books are A Choice of Enemies: America confronts the Middle East (2009) and Strategy: A History (2013).
