Screening: 'Dying to tell the Story'

This Emmy nominated documentary studies the motivations of journalists dedicated enough to risk their lives for a story.

Screening – ‘Dying to tell the Story’
Tuesday 29th March - 7.30pm
Following by Q&A with Amy Eldon, Presenter and Executive Director, GlobalTribe
Film Duration – 90 minutes

This Emmy nominated documentary studies the motivations of journalists dedicated enough to risk their lives for a story. We follow narrator Amy Eldon on a personal journey to find meaning in the death of her older brother, 22-year-old Reuters photographer Dan Eldon. Dan was among a group of five journalists attacked by a mob during the Somali famine in 1993; he and three others were stoned to death. Amy Eldon interviews broadcast journalist Christiane Amanpour, British broadcaster Martin Bell, and war photographer Don McCullin among others in this compelling 1 1/2 hour documentary. As she interviews other journalists and the sole surviving witness to Dan's death, we see her attain the peace she sought.

The film won both Director's Guild of America and Independent Spirit nominations, and was selected as the "best documentary on television" by the National Headliners Association.

As they began to take photographs, the crowd erupted in anger at what had happened and attacked the journalists. Dan and his colleagues Hansi Krauss, Anthony Macharia of Reuters, and Hos Maina of the Associated Press, were surrounded, stoned and beaten to death.

Reuters, 1993

Dan would have understood the suffering of the grieving mob. It is with regret that we lose his lens to the world, his respect for all people, and his appreciation of the beauty, as well as the horrors of life.

Carloyn Wellso, 1993, Cedar Rapids Gazette
