The veteran BBC correspondent talks to Allan Little about the changes that have taken place in the ways in which wars are reported from the Gulf War to Bosnia, Afghanistan to Rwanda, as well as the changes in Jeremy himself.

After joining the BBC as a trainee in 1984, Jeremy Bowen first became a foreign correspondent four years later. He had witnessed violence, both at home and abroad, but it wasn’t until he covered his first war, in El Salvador, that he felt he had arrived. Armed with the fearlessness of youth, he lived for the job, was in love with it, aware of the dangers but always assuming the bullets and bombs were meant for others.

After 12 years in some of the world’s most dangerous places, the death of a close friend in Lebanon and the birth of his first child, he began a process of reassessment that led to the end of his affair with wars.

Join us as we discuss his desire to become a war reporter and how the nature of the job has changed.

Allan Little is the BBC's Foreign Affairs Correspondent. He has also served as the BBC’s former Yugoslavia, Moscow, South Africa and Africa correspondent.

Jeremy Bowen is the author of War Stories.
