A lecture to celebrate the Bicentenary of the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow, 1807-2007.
When William Hunter bequeathed his great collection, gathered together in London through a lifetime's pursuit of research and teaching, to the University of Glasgow, his primary concerns appear to have been that this treasure house of Enlightenment knowledge be kept together and in use. Moving the Hunterian to Scotland 200 years ago was certainly London's loss, however the transition had significant consequences for the collection itself and for Hunter's posthumous reputation.
