A look at the temperance movement in Victorian London and the still active legacy of temperance in the city today.
The temperance movement in Victorian London was vibrant and ever-changing. From the early campaign against the gin-palace, to later popular teetotalism and radical prohibitionism, the campaign against âdrunkennessâ retained a hold on the political life and moral imagination of Londoners into the early 20th century. Drawing on the unique collections at Bishopsgate Institute and other London archives, this talk will explore this world and consider the still active legacy of temperance in the city today.
Vanessa Taylor is a sessional lecturer in modern British history at Birkbeck College, University of London.
