The Labour Movement, Socialism and Democracy

Speaker Tony Benn explores the history of the labour movement, socialism and democracy.

Bishospgate Library is delighted to welcome Tony Benn to talk on the history of the labour movement, socialism and democracy. Tony Benn is one of the most recognisable figures in post-war British politics. He retired from Parliament in 2001 as MP for Chesterfield, to ‘devote more time to politics’, serving as President of the Stop the War Coalition since 2004. He was the longest-serving Labour MP in the party’s history, joining in 1942 and first becoming an MP in 1950. A Cabinet Minister in the Wilson and Callaghan governments from 1964-79, Benn was also an elected member of the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party from 1959-94, and Chairman of the Party in 1971-72.
