A look at the work of three significant photographers of the East End
This talk looks at the work of three significant photographers of the East End from the 1930s.
Cyril Arapoff was a Russian émigré who set up a portrait studio in Oxford but regularly visited London âon specâ to photograph stories for possible publication in picture magazines. Margaret Monck was an amateur photographer who was fascinated by everyday life on Londonâs streets and Humphrey Spender documented housing conditions in Whitechapel and Stepney whilst studying to be an architect. The work of these photographers can be seen in the collections of the Museum of London.
Speaker Mike Seaborne is Senior Curator of Photographs at the Museum of London and a practising photographer. In 1995 he curated the landmark exhibition, Photographersâ London 1839-1994, and wrote the accompanying book.
